» Sun Care...

Q How do I choose the right Sun Protection Factor (SPF)?
SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is the most common way for sun care products to be categorised. It is a measure of how much a sunscreen protects the skin in the sun without burning; the higher the SPF, the greater the protection from burning, providing sufficient product is applied regularly. Using a higher SPF is designed to increase your level of protection, not the amount of time you spend in the sun. Choose a product which has an SPF of 15 or more to protect again burning and a high UVA star rating to guard against long-term skin damage. The choice of the necessary sun protection factor depends, however, on the length of time during which the skin's natural defense can protect against the skin reddening. Depending on the skin type, this is on average between 5 minutes for pale, fair haired and maybe 30 minutes for darker skin types. The time, multiplied by the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) gives the theoretical and maximum time that you can remain in the sun with a sun protection product, without burning. This depends on full and frequent application of sunscreen.
• This time is also influenced by the time of the day, the time of year and the geographical location (closer to the equator means more sun). • The sun should be avoided between 11am and 3pm, when it is at its strongest. • The suns rays can be reflected off water and sand, and some sun rays can also penetrate glass and other barriers, thus on sunny days, the side of the body nearest the car window will feel heat and may also develop color. • The face, neck and trunk are 2-4 times more sensitive than the limbs. • Different races originally came from different areas with different climates and generally the skin type of these people reflects the level of sun exposure with an in-built defense against the sun. • Darker complexions can still burn, be damaged and show signs of premature skin ageing, so should be protected in the sun, even though it will have more natural sun protection than a fair skinned person. • Using insufficient sunscreen can halve the sun protection factor. Repeated application of a lower factor does not provide the same protection as a higher factor, e.g. 2 applications of SPF 4 does not provide the same protection as SPF 8.
Children's skin needs extra protection when it comes to the sun. The use of high protection sun products is essential if children are to be protected properly during their time in the sun and reduce the risk of repercussions in later life. • All babies under six months should be kept out of direct sunlight at all times and children under two should be encouraged to stay in the shade. • T-shirts and brimmed hats should always be worn. • Encourage children to play out of direct sunlight.

Q Will high Sun Protection Factor give you less of a tan?
No! The skin will also tan with a high SPF, It just takes longer. The great advantage is that the skin becomes accustomed to the sun, so tanning becomes less hazardous and the tan lasts longer.

Q Do you also tan in the shade?
Yes, because half of the UV radiation is still present in the shade.

Q What are the main reasons for sun allergies?
Some people are sensitive to sun light. Polymorphic Light Eruption (PLE) is a skin reaction to the sun resulting in raised red lumps, which appear after sun exposure in the same area of the body time after time. Affecting 10% of the population, it can be reduced by good coverage of a high factor sunscreen. The affected area should be covered or kept out of the sun. UVA is the main cause of sun allergies as these rays penetrate deep into the skin. It is only in the deeper layer containing living skin cells where sun allergy can be induced. PLE should not be confused with prickly heat, which is a rash caused by blocked sweat glands, usually occurring on areas covered by clothing. Certain medications can increase sensitivity to the sun. Check with your pharmacist or GP if you have any concerns.

Q What are free radicals?
Free radicals are unstable substances originated in the body, increasing in the skin with exposure to strong sunlight. They can cause cell damage, premature skin ageing and sun allergies.

Q What is 'Immediate Protection'?
Immediate protection means that the sun protection lotion/spray starts to work as soon as it is applied to the skin. This means that it is not necessary to wait indoors or in the shade before the product starts to work.
